Located in the far north of Romania, the beautiful region of Maramures seems to belong to another world, out of time. Life still follows an ancient rhythm of a peasant world that has almost disappeared in other places, where people try to keep their traditions alive, which are handed down from generation to generation.
There is also a strong sense of belonging to the Orthodox community. Easter in particular is the most important feast of the liturgical year.
The reportage wants to capture some of the salient moments of these celebrations ranging from Holy Thursday, called “joia mare”, big Thursday, which for Romanians is the day of the dead; day of prayer when people go to cemeteries to visit their dead.
It continues on the afternoon of Good Friday, or Black Friday as believers call it, when the requiem mass is celebrated outside and inside the numerous wooden churches typical of this region, a funeral mass during which songs with reference are sung. to the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. It is in practice his funeral, which follows precise rituals such as going out and surrounding the church three times with lighted candles, symbolically retracing the Via Crucis.
And at the end on Saturday evening the evocative Midnight Mass is celebrated, the Mass of the Resurrection; it is customary for people to wear something new (a symbol of renewal) and go to mass, taking a candle with them. On this occasion the baskets with Easter foods are blessed. At midnight, with the lights off, with a special rite, the “Holy Light” arrives, passing from the priest who holds a lighted candle in his hand, to all present, who in turn will light their candles. It is said “to take the light”. It is tradition that, with candles lit and singing, the priest goes around the church three times, together with all the participants. The priest then addresses the faithful saying “Hristos a inviat”, Christ is risen, while the faithful respond “Adevarat a sent”, he is truly risen.

Situata all’estremo nord della Romania, la bellissima regione di Maramures sembra appartenere ad un altro mondo, fuori dal tempo. La vita segue ancora un ritmo antichissimo di un mondo contadino ormai quasi scomparso in altri luoghi, dove si cerca di mantenere vive le proprie tradizioni che vengono tramandate di generazione in generazione.
Forte è anche il senso di appartenenza alla comunità ortodossa. La Pasqua in particolare è la festa delle feste la più importante dell’anno liturgico.
Il reportage vuole cogliere alcuni dei momenti salienti di queste celebrazioni che vanno dal giovedì santo, chiamato “joia mare”, giovedì grande, che per i romeni è il giorno dei morti; giorno di preghiera cui le persone si recano nei cimiteri per far visita ai propri defunti.
Si prosegue il pomeriggio del Venerdì santo, o Venerdì nero come lo chiamano i credenti, quando si celebra, fuori e dentro le numerose chiese in legno tipiche di questa regione, la messa di requiem, una messa funebre durante la quale si cantano brani con riferimento alla crocifissione e alla sepoltura di Gesù. E’ in pratica il suo funerale, che segue rituali precisi come uscire e circondare la chiesa tre volte con le candele accese, ripercorrendo simbolicamente la Via Crucis.
E alla fine il sabato sera si celebra la suggestiva Messa della mezzanotte, la messa della Resurrezione; è usanza che le persone debbano indossare qualcosa di nuovo (simbolo del rinnovamento) e andare a messa, portando con se una candela. In questa occasione vengono benedetti i cesti con i cibi pasquali. A mezzanotte, a luci spente, con un rito speciale, arriva la “Luce Santa” che passa dal prete che ha in mano una candela accesa, a tutti i presenti, che a loro volta accenderanno le loro candele. Si dice “prendere la luce”. E’ tradizione che, con le candele accese e cantando, il prete faccia il giro della chiesa tre volte, insieme a tutti i partecipanti. Il sacerdote poi si rivolge ai fedeli dicendo “Hristos a inviat”, Cristo è risorto, mentre i fedeli rispondono “Adevarat a inviat”, è veramente risorto.
