Francesco Munaro_Yo soy Fidel

For years I told myself that I should visit Cuba before Fidel Castro’s death, thinking that the island would quickly transform after his death.
It so happened that I was in Cuba, together with three photographer friends, on the day of his death, November 25, 2016 and for the following 9 days of national mourning declared by his brother and head of the Cuban government, Raul Castro.
In those days we crossed the whole island, from Havana to Santiago, along the same streets as the funeral procession, meeting and talking with dozens and dozens of Cuban men and women, we saw a compact Cuba in national unity and I think sincerely saddened for the sudden absence of their “Commander”, as everyone called him, united in the slogan “Yo soy Fidel”.
To the question: “And now where will Cuba go?” all, with various nuances, but with great determination, replied that the direction had already been marked by the Commander and that they intended to follow it adapting it to the present day.
I know perfectly well that there is an iron regime in Cuba, but I think most of them were sincere, united by a proud national identity that mourning made, if possible, stronger.
I had the feeling that for many it was like the loss of a father, many also added: “For better or for worse”, speaking of the Commander’s leadership, “He did the best he could for Cuba”.
History will judge.
