claudia merighi – Un viaggio nel viaggio

Preparing for a trip to northern Romania in 2019 I contacted the Help for Family Association of Bagnacavallo (RA) which has been working in Radauti for almost 30 years to support girls and boys living in conditions of extreme poverty and social fragility and economic. In addition to the Maria Ward Center which welcomes children and children after school, volunteers dedicate a few days to visiting families, to meet parents, check the hygienic conditions of the accommodation and closely monitor the living conditions in which the children grow up. , thus trying to stem the situations most at risk in a timely manner.
The afternoon of my arrival in Radauti I was invited to go with the volunteers to the suburbs of the town and my journey suddenly entered into another journey, more intimate and unexpected.
I had the opportunity to see with my own eyes the people who live there every day, away from the main streets, next to abandoned playgrounds, makeshift nomad camps, in occupied and dilapidated buildings, like a former hospital. The families who welcomed me live in very confined spaces, often in one room, sometimes with the toilets outside. That single room serves as a bedroom for the whole family and as a living room, sometimes even as a kitchen, thanks to the presence of large stoves that are used both to cook food and to heat the rooms. The walls are literally covered with furniture, shelves, votive images, calendars, sometimes clothes hung out to dry or jackets and coats; the sofas act as beds and the beds as sofas; on the floor carpets of different colors, as well as shoes of various sizes. In any case, despite the obvious modesty and often inadequate spaces and furnishings, people were almost happy to show me their home. I was very impressed by a father who proudly showed the renovation work that led to the enlargement of the accommodation, but using the single bathroom as a passage from the kitchen to the bedrooms.
I do not deny that it was not easy to enter these homes, knowing the real living conditions of the girls and boys, in which the parents are often lacking in terms of relationships, affection, education. At certain moments I was overwhelmed by a sense of anguish and almost suffocation, dissipated at least in part by the children themselves, with their smiles and the obvious desire to play and live (rightly) without too many thoughts.
