Easter is the holiest holiday of the whole year for the Orthodox world, and is particularly felt in Greece too. On the island of Karpathos, in the small village of Olympos, perched on the mountains north of the island, Easter rites linked to Byzantine traditions are still held.
The festival involves all the inhabitants of the small village, and begins on Good Friday (Megali Paraskevi), when women and children bring flowers to the church to decorate the Epitaph, a symbolic coffin of Christ, on which are also hung photos of the deceased in the last year. In the evening, the Epitaph is carried in procession through the narrow streets of the town, stopping in the houses for the recitation of prayers.
Saturday is the day dedicated to the preparation of the Easter lunch. The women make bread in the ancient ovens and goat is put to cook, a typical dish of this festival. In the evening the Easter rite begins and lasts for hours, in a church full of people.
The celebrations end on Tuesday with the procession of icons through the village to the small cemetery and then around the paths stopping in the small churches scattered throughout the surrounding valley.

La Pasqua è la festività più sacra di tutto l’anno per il mondo ortodosso, ed anche in Grecia è particolarmente sentita. Sull’isola di Karpathos, nel piccolo villaggio di Olympos, abbarbicato sulle montagne a nord dell’isola, si svolgono ancora i riti pasquali legati alle tradizioni bizantine.
La festa coinvolge tutti gli abitanti del piccolo paesino, ed inizia il venerdì santo (Megali Paraskevi) , quando donne e bambini portano in chiesa fiori per decorare l’Epitaffio, bara simbolica di Cristo , sulla quale vengono anche appese foto dei defunti nell’ultimo anno . Alla sera, l’Epitaffio viene portato in processione nelle viuzze del paese, fermandosi nelle case per la recita di preghiere.
Il sabato è la giornata dedicata alla preparazione del pranzo pasquale. Le donne fanno il pane negli antichi forni e viene messa a cuocere la capra, piatto tipico di questa festa. Alla sera inizia il rito pasquale che si prolunga per ore, in una chiesa gremita di gente.
Le celebrazioni terminano il martedì con la processione delle icone attraverso il paese fino al piccolo cimitero e poi in giro per i sentieri fermandosi nelle piccole chiesette disseminate ovunque nella vallata circostante
