Guillaume Michel – Yuan Yang

The rice terrace fields of Yuan Yang in the Yunnan are the most beautiful ones in the world.
13 years ago, I believed it was a chance to visit them, and I was wrong.
In fact, the chance was to meet people, so called Hani, living there and to exchange with a different but so interesting culture. Obviously Hani did not speak english but only local dialect or mandarin and I was unable to get out any Chinese words but finally we managed to understand each other. Socializing and sharing is not a matter of language but only a matter of willingness. The rice terrace fields in Yunnan are located in medium mountains between 1200 and 2000 meters altitude.
At the top, conserved forests act as a catchment for the rainfall and recharge the fields and terraces below. A system of canals built by the Hani divert the water into the terraces. The specific climate here, the landscape and the rice fields reveal beautiful sceneries.
Hani have been building terraces for centuries in the Yunnan mountains. Landscape and Hani people merge together and become in harmony. Early in the morning it is not rare to witness the marriage between the sky and the rice terrace fields. And at that time it becomes then cinematically magical.
I had the opportunity also to attend a local traditional Hani market in a small village high in the mountains. It was made of butchers, duck sellers, fruits and vegetables. It was the weekly meeting of all basic necessities of life and the village people. I ate the best spicy grilled tofu that I have never ever eaten.
During this market time, you even can be surprised by seing dentist practicing in the street….
When I left this amazing country, fully reloaded into humility, I was definitely convinced that the world is much bigger than we are led to believe.
I am sorry for not being able to write or to speak in Italian but socializing and sharing is not a matter of language, only a matter of willingness.

E in quel momento diventa poi cinematograficamente magico.
