Two things are striking when traveling in Myanmar: the intense construction, maintenance and expansion of the road network and the fact that the most strenuous aspects of this activity are carried out for the most part by female workers.
Women in Myanmar have a relatively greater degree of independence and autonomy than in other Asian countries but the education system penalizes them, positions of responsibility are precluded and consequently they are entrusted with the most strenuous and less valuable jobs.
Road construction is an immediate example of this; the activity is quite simple, a bed of stones is placed on the ground and then the tar is passed. The work of collecting and transporting large stones, their subsequent breaking into smaller stones, the transport and final positioning of the latter are all left to the female gender. The men are only involved in driving vehicles, the fire that melts the tar and the pouring of the tar on the stones, all activities that involve much more breaks than those performed by women.
This type of construction site is often found on any road you face; already a few photos testify what has been described and explain more than many words.

Le donne in Myanmar hanno un grado di indipendenza e autonomia relativamente maggiore rispetto ad altri paesi asiatici ma il sistema educativo le penalizza, le posizioni di responsabilità sono precluse e conseguentemente a esse sono affidati i lavori più faticosi e di minor valore.
La costruzione delle strade è un esempio immediato di tutto ciò; l’attività è piuttosto semplice, sulla terra viene disposto un letto di sassi e successivamente passato il catrame. Il lavoro di raccolta e trasporto di grandi pietre, la loro successiva rottura in sassi più piccoli, il trasporto e il posizionamento finale di quest’ultimi sono tutti demandati al genere femminile. Gli uomini si occupano solo della guida degli automezzi, del fuoco che scioglie il catrame e del versamento del catrame stesso sui sassi, tutte attività che comportano molto più pause di quelle svolte dalle donne.
Questo tipo di cantieri si trova spesso su qualsiasi strada si faccia; già poche foto testimoniano quanto descritto e spiegano più di molte parole.
