Between Fire and Ice

Iceland has become the primary landscape through which I explore my photographic practice. Over multiple years and repeated journeys, the country has evolved from a subject of observation into a long-term artistic investigation of transformation, time, and the forces that shape our environment.

My work is rooted in the encounter between opposing elements: fire and ice, creation and erosion, permanence and change. Iceland’s unique geology offers a rare opportunity to witness processes that are normally invisible within a human lifetime. Volcanic eruptions, retreating glaciers, shifting coastlines, and extreme weather conditions reveal a landscape that is constantly being rewritten.

Rather than seeking iconic views, I am interested in moments where the landscape transcends documentation and becomes a reflection on the passage of time. The photographs explore how natural forces leave traces across the land and how light temporarily reveals these hidden narratives. In this sense, the camera functions not only as a recording tool but also as an instrument for observing relationships between geological time and human perception.

The project is developed through continuous fieldwork across Iceland. Returning to locations over multiple seasons and years allows me to observe subtle and dramatic transformations alike. These repeated encounters form an evolving visual archive that documents not fixed places, but ongoing processes.

At its core, this body of work is an attempt to engage with a landscape that exists in a state of perpetual becoming. The photographs presented here are fragments of a larger, unfinished narrative—one that continues to grow with each journey and each return to the field.

Tra Fuoco e Ghiaccio

L’Islanda è diventata il paesaggio principale attraverso cui esploro la mia pratica fotografica. Nel corso di più anni e viaggi ripetuti, il paese si è evoluto da soggetto di osservazione a un’indagine artistica a lungo termine sulla trasformazione, il tempo e le forze che plasmano il nostro ambiente.

Il mio lavoro si basa sull’incontro tra elementi opposti: fuoco e ghiaccio, creazione ed erosione, permanenza e cambiamento. La geologia unica dell’Islanda offre un’opportunità rara di assistere a processi che normalmente sarebbero invisibili all’interno di una vita umana. Eruzioni vulcaniche, ghiacciai in ritirata, coste che cambiano e condizioni meteorologiche estreme rivelano un paesaggio costantemente riscritto.

Piuttosto che cercare vedute iconiche, mi interessano momenti in cui il paesaggio trascende la documentazione e diventa un riflesso sul passare del tempo. Le fotografie esplorano come le forze naturali lasciano tracce sulla terra e come la luce riveli temporaneamente queste narrazioni nascoste. In questo senso, la telecamera funziona non solo come strumento di registrazione, ma anche come strumento per osservare le relazioni tra il tempo geologico e la percezione umana.

Il progetto si sviluppa attraverso un lavoro sul campo continuo in tutta l’Islanda. Tornare in luoghi attraversati per più stagioni e anni mi permette di osservare sia trasformazioni sottili che drammatiche. Questi incontri ripetuti formano un archivio visivo in evoluzione che documenta non luoghi fissi, ma processi in corso.

Alla base, questo corpus di opere è un tentativo di confrontarsi con un paesaggio che esiste in uno stato di perpetuo divenire. Le fotografie presentate qui sono frammenti di una narrazione più ampia e incompiuta—che continua a crescere con ogni viaggio e ogni ritorno sul campo.
