Mardi Gras is a French expression meaning “Fat Tuesday.” The use of French, in an English-speaking country where Spanish is the second most widely spoken language, reflects the historical and cultural roots of Louisiana — and of New Orleans in particular — as well as the Creole origins of Carnival celebrations in this part of the Deep South. And here too, as in all parts of the world where carnival is celebrated, dissolution from social obligations and hierarchies, to make way for the overthrow of order, constitutes the essence of the celebration. But above all, unlike other, more famous celebrations that have become increasingly codified, participation here is total: there is no clear distinction between those who parade and those who observe. A sense of spontaneity still prevails — something that has been lost elsewhere — and irreverent irony continues to flow freely through the streets, in a collective experience where everything can be staged and redefined.

E anche qui, come in tutte le parti del mondo in cui si celebra il carnevale, lo scioglimento dagli obblighi sociali e dalle gerarchie, per lasciar posto al rovesciamento dell’ordine, costituisce l’essenza della festa. Ma soprattutto, rispetto ad altre celebrazioni più famose, ma che nel contempo sono diventate più codificate, qui la partecipazione è totale, non c’è distinzione tra chi sfila e chi osserva e si respira una spontaneità che altrove si è persa; l’ironia irriverente scorre ancora libera per le strade, in un’esperienza collettiva in cui tutto può essere messo in scena e ridefinito.
