iPhone 6 Reportage — Travel Notes

After the latest news about Cuba, it occurred to me to reopen the images of my first and only trip to the island. I did not return to those photographs looking for the orderly memory of a place, but something more fragile: the trace of a gaze that remained suspended.

The focus fell on a series of images that I call travel notes. Not completed photographs, but sketches: sensations, impressions, apparitions collected without pretense of clarity. Many are blurred, dirty, crossed by reflections; Some were taken from a car, through a window, others seem stolen more from time than space. They are images taken with an iPhone 6, with all the limits and at the same time the freedom of a light, immediate, almost distracted tool.

It is precisely this imperfection that has become, years later, their meaning. Cuba does not appear as a linear story, nor as a postcard. It emerges in fragments: a faith that resists, a road seen in passing, a political icon, a domestic interior, a distant party, an America reflected on the glass, the sea that remains while everything else passes.

These notes do not attempt to explain Cuba. Rather, they try to restore the way I perceived it: as a country crossed by memory, waiting, beauty and contradiction. A place seen in transit, but remained on you.
