Anna Cinque – Fishing in Senegal

Anna Cinque – Fishing in Senegal

Senegal’s great wealth is the Ocean. Along the Atlantic coast, from the early hours of the day, fishermen begin their activities.

I was struck by the rudimentary tools, the primitive and remedied clothing and equipment, the very heavy boats that require hard physical effort and continuous maintenance that, with the addition of materials, makes them heavier and heavier but always painted in bright colors.

The work is mostly carried out in silence, broken only by the waves of the sea and the calls of men. It was nice to observe the seamanship, the ability to coordinate between the fishermen, the elegant, prudent and measured gestures.

The whole village participates in fishing. Young people go out to sea, children help on land, women select and sell small catches while large fish are contracted by the elderly.

A simple and ancient world that ensures the survival of the coastal population.
