SOUTH AFRICA: THE “RAINBOW COUNTRY” WITH SOME SHADES OF GRAY

A journey to discover South Africa, understanding concretely what this nation has in terms of natural beauty and wildlife but also noting the social mechanisms that lead it to be one of the most problematic lands in the world in terms of crime and inequality.

It starts from Cape Town, a fervent and colorful city, where the climb to the summit of Table Mountain is a must if you want to experience the thrill of a unique panorama, with the fog descending from the flat summit to the ocean like a soft blanket. Different emotions are experienced when visiting the prison-island of Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of the 27 years of imprisonment that preceded the abolition of apartheid.

Moving away from the urban center, you can experience the experience of passing from the cold and tumultuous waters of the Atlantic Ocean, with the peak of beauty at the Cape of Good Hope, to the more temperate and placid waters of the Indian Ocean, along the Garden Route.

Leaving the coast, you plunge into completely different scenarios passing from the heights of the Drakensberg Mountains in the province of Mpumalanga, to the endless expanses of the Limpopo savannah. Here barbed wire and electrified fences are no longer used to protect each other between men but to protect themselves and wild animals, including the famous “big five”.

The conclusions, after such a varied experience, are not easy to draw. In South Africa you will encounter breathtaking scenery, savor sublime cuisine and contemplate the power of nature; But, unfortunately, in these lands, man is even more frightening than the animal of the savannah.

Un viaggio alla scoperta del Sudafrica, comprendendo in concreto cosa questa nazione possiede riguardo a bellezze naturali e fauna selvatica ma anche constatando i meccanismi sociali che la portano ad essere una delle terre più problematiche al mondo in quanto a criminalità e disuguaglianza.

Si parte da Cape Town, città fervente e colorata, dove la salita alla vetta della Table Mountain è una tappa obbligata se si vuole provare l’emozione di un panorama unico, con la nebbia che scende dalla piatta vetta fino all’oceano come una soffice coperta. Emozioni di diverso genere si provano invece visitando l’isola-prigione di Robben Island, dove Nelson Mandela trascorse 18 dei 27 anni di prigionia che precedettero l’abolizione dell’apartheid.

Allontanandosi dal centro urbano, si può provare l’esperienza di passare dalle fredde e tumultuose acque dell’Oceano Atlantico, con l’apice della bellezza al Capo di Buona Speranza, a quelle più temperate e placide dell’Oceano Indiano, percorrendo la Garden Route.

Abbandonando la costa, si piomba in scenari del tutto diversi passando dalle alture dei Monti Drakensberg nella provincia dello Mpumalanga, alle distese sterminate della savana del Limpopo. Qui il filo spinato e le recinsioni elettrificate non sono più utilizzati per proteggersi tra uomini ma per tutelarsi e tutelare gli animali selvatici, compresi i celebri “big five”.

Le conclusioni, dopo un’esperienza così variegata, non sono semplici da trarre. In Sudafrica si incontrano scenari mozzafiato, si assapora una cucina sublime e si contempla la potenza della natura; ma, purtroppo, da queste parti l’uomo fa ancora più paura dell’animale della savana.
