Gujarat, a state located in the northwestern part of India, on the border with Pakistan, is a land rich in history, culture, and an important industrial reality. My tour in Gujarat was mainly aimed at the tribal realities that populate the area.  Rabari, Gamit, Warli, Kunbi, Bhil, Konka, Rathwa, Dhanka, Kathodi, Garasias, Jath, Bajana…. and others, are just some of the tribes that populate this vast territory, overlooking the Indian Ocean on one side, and incorporating one of the largest salt deserts in the world, the Rann of Kutch, which reaches the border with Pakistan.

The population met is generally welcoming and warm. Once the first impact of mistrust has passed, everyone approaches to be photographed or to ask to take a selfie with us. Only in the Muslim part of Kutch, where the Jath tribes live, is it somewhat complicated to be able to photograph women wearing heavy nose rings. Only with the consent (payment) of the tribal chief is it possible to take some photos.

The striking thing is the poverty of the people who live in these tribes scattered throughout the territory. Although we live in an industrialized state, as soon as you leave the main cities such as Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara the absolute lack of drinking water, electricity, sanitation, you immediately notice. But… there is always a but in the stories, everyone or almost everyone has a cell phone….

GUJARAT TRIBALE

Il Gujarat, uno stato situato nella parte nord occidentale dell’India, al confine con il Pakistan, è una terra ricca di storia, cultura, ed una importante  realtà industriale. Il mio tour nel Gujarat si è rivolto principalmente verso le realtà tribali che popolano la zona .  Rabari, Gamit, Warli, Kunbi, Bhil, Konka, Rathwa, Dhanka, Kathodi, Garasias, Jath, Bajana…. e altre, sono solo alcune delle tribù che popolano questo vasto territorio, affacciato da un lato sull’oceano indiano, dall’altro incorpora uno dei piu’ grandi deserti di sale al mondo , il Rann of Kutch , che arriva sino al confine con il Pakistan .

La popolazione incontrata è generalmente accogliente e calorosa. Superato il primo impatto di diffidenza, tutti si avvicinano per farsi fotografare o per chiedere di fare un selfie con noi. Solo nella parte mussulmana del Kutch, dove vivono le tribù Jath, è alquanto complicato poter fotografare le donne che portano pesanti anelli al naso . Solo con il consenso ( pagamento ) del capo tribù si riesce a scattare qualche foto.

La cosa che colpisce è la povertà delle persone che vivono in queste tribù sparse per il territorio. Pur vivendo in uno stato industrializzato, appena si esce dalle città principali quali Surat , Ahmedabad, Vadodara l’assoluta mancanza di acqua potabile , elettricità, servizi igienici, si nota subito. Ma, … c’e’ sempre un ma nelle storie, tutti o quasi hanno il cellulare….
