Ghat souk cremations

A journey through life, death and rebirth in the temple of Pashupatinath in Nepal, for the cremations of the Ghat souk of the sacred Bagmati river.

In Pashupatinath the ashes of the dead after cremation are scattered on the pyres overlooking the Bagmati, the river that flows over the hills of Shivpuri and then flows to India and flows into the Koshi River. For Hindus and Buddhists it is a sacred river, therefore dotted with temples along most of its course. The rite, which is lost in the mists of time, is linked to the dogma that only through a correct cremation procedure in the temple can the soul of the Hindu incarnate again. The ceremonial is complex and what we witness is actually the manifestation of the pain that every human being feels in the face of the loss of a loved one. Of whatever faith or creed they are. And in any case, we have something in common: in the Hindu religion, death is considered only a passage to a new life that is the result of past actions.

Viaggio tra vita, morte e rinascita nel tempio di Pashupatinath in Nepal,  per le cremazioni suk Ghat del sacro fiume Bagmati.

A Pashupatinath vengono disperse le ceneri dei morti dopo la cremazione sulle pire che si affacciano sul Bagmati, il fiume che sgorga sulle colline di Shivpuri per scorrere poi fino in India e gettarsi nel fiume Koshi. Per induisti e buddisti è un fiume sacro, dunque punteggiato di templi lungo gran parte del suo corso. Il rito, che si perde nella notte dei tempi, è legato al dogma che solo mediante un corretto procedimento di cremazione al tempio l’anima dell’induista potrà incarnarsi nuovamente. Il cerimoniale è complesso e quello a cui si assiste è in realtà la manifestazione del dolore che prova ogni essere umano davanti alla perdita di una cara persona. Di qualsiasi fede o credo essi siano. E comunque qualcosa in comune lo abbiamo: nella religione induista la morte è considerata solo un passaggio ad una nuova vita che è il risultato delle azioni passate.
