PANAME

Paname is the slang name given to Paris since the late 19th century, which is still used today by locals, particularly in working-class neighborhoods and youth culture.

Probably coined because of the financial scandal related to the construction of the Panama Canal, or perhaps because the bourgeoisie had made the hat that bears its name a symbol of elegance which was later emulated by the working classes, the term has since its origins referred to the city of style and distinction, but also of disenchantment due to the gap between the image the French capital projects of itself, and its actual reality.

This name with shifting meanings, seems to be reflected in the streets and life of the renowned Ville Lumière, where lights and shadows meet and merge.

“Paname” is an anti-celebratory narrative of Paris, depicted through a gaze that lingers on some fragments of its daily life, in a constant tension between the fascination of its name and the contradictions it encompasses.

Paname è il nome gergale dato a Parigi a partire dalla fine del XIX secolo, ancora oggi utilizzato dai locali, in particolare nei quartieri popolari e nella cultura giovanile.

Probabilmente coniato a causa dello scandalo finanziario legato alla costruzione del Canale di Panama, o forse perché la borghesia aveva fatto del cappello che porta il suo nome un simbolo di eleganza emulato poi dalle classi popolari, fin dalle origini il termine indica la città dello stile e della distinzione, ma anche del disincanto dovuto allo scarto tra l’immagine che la capitale francese proietta di sé, e la sua realtà.

Questo appellativo dai significati mutevoli sembra riflettersi nelle strade e nella vita della rinomata Ville Lumière, dove luci e ombre si incontrano e si confondono.
