The deep South

Tourists visiting the United States of America prefer big cities, such as New York or Los Angeles, or the spectacular landscapes of Monument Valley or Yellowstone Park.

But we like to explore, off the tourist routes, what is most authentic, spontaneous, the America that shows itself without filters, the most everyday, roughest, most spontaneous.

The trip to the deep south of the USA, between Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, allowed us to get to know not so much the “American dream” as its daily awakening: dusty, theatrical, sometimes surreal — but authentic in its staging.

So we got to know the America that still puts on its boots and cowboy hat, that parades with horses and longhorned longhorned longhorns, but also the America that knows how to ironize itself, creating theaters where fake bandits represent improbable bank robberies and where the influence of Mexican culture re-emerges with its very particular relationship with death.

We saw towns with names from western movies — Tucumcari, Terlingua, Alamogordo — each lined up along a main street with Irish places serving pizza and shops selling weapons and ammunition; in Amarillo, at the Big Texan Steak Ranch, in spite of cholesterol they compete with two-kilo steaks: those who manage to finish it in less than an hour, do not pay for it. Even the typical mailboxes that we see in many American films and series, lined up like disarmed soldiers, seem to tell of an America we do not know.

We looked at and photographed America without any nostalgia or complacency. Rather, we were guided by curiosity, a fascination for an everyday life that takes its time to show itself, without masks but with a certain theatrical inclination and a pinch of irony.

COM’È PROFONDO IL SUD!

I turisti che visitano gli Stati Uniti d’America prediligono come mete le grandi città, come New York o Los Angeles, oppure gli spettacolari paesaggi della Monument Valley o del parco di Yellowstone.

Ma a noi piace esplorare, fuori dalle rotte turistiche, ciò che è più autentico, spontaneo, l’America che si mostra senza filtri, quella più quotidiana, più ruvida, più spontanea.

Il viaggio nel profondo sud degli USA, tra Texas, New Mexico e Oklahoma, ci ha permesso di conoscere non tanto il “sogno americano” quanto il suo risveglio quotidiano: polveroso, teatrale, talvolta surreale — ma autentico nella sua messa in scena.

Così abbiamo conosciuto l’America che ancora si mette gli stivali e il cappello da cowboy, che sfila in parata con i cavalli e le vacche longhorn dalle lunghissime corna, ma anche l’America che sa ironizzare su se stessa, realizzando teatrini dove finti banditi rappresentano improbabili rapine in banca e dove riemerge l’influenza della cultura messicana con il suo particolarissimo rapporto con la morte.

Abbiamo visto cittadine dai nomi da film western — Tucumcari, Terlingua, Alamogordo — ciascuna allineata lungo una main street con locali irlandesi che servono pizza e negozi che vendono armi e munizioni; ad Amarillo, al Big Texan Steak Ranch, alla faccia del colesterolo si gareggia a colpi di bistecche da due chili: chi riesce a finirla in meno di un’ora, non la paga. Persino le tipiche cassette della posta che vediamo in tanti film e serie americane, allineate come soldatini in disarmo, sembrano raccontare un’America che non conosciamo.

Abbiamo guardato e fotografato l’America senza alcuna nostalgia, né compiacimento. Piuttosto ci ha guidato una curiosità, una fascinazione per una quotidianità che si prende il proprio tempo per mostrarsi, senza maschere ma con una certa inclinazione teatrale e un pizzico di ironia.
