Iceland 

My reportage on Iceland seeks to document not only the landscape, but also the experience of encountering these primordial forces that continue to shape the island to this day. The images tell the story of a land in constant geological motion, where visitors can witness the action of the Earth’s creative and destructive powers.

The volcanic landscape is in the foreground: from the moss-covered lava fields with their distinctive green carpet that takes decades to settle, to the perfectly circular volcanic lake (Kerið) that bears witness to Iceland’s volcanic origins. Geothermal activity is shown in the smoldering ground, where visitors appear almost like ghosts in the sulfur mist.

Iceland’s glacial heritage is documented through icebergs floating in the glacier lagoon and the striking glacier peak against the backdrop of the mountains. These images tell both the beauty and fragility of Iceland’s ice, which is retreating due to climate change.

The human element provides an important perspective and context: hikers on the wooden walkway climbing an extinct crater, the traditional peat house representing Iceland’s architectural heritage, and tourists experiencing the wild power of the Gullfoss waterfall.

The interplay of the elements – fire and ice, ancient and modern, human and natural – creates a compelling visual narrative about this unique Nordic island. The constantly uncertain skies and spectacular lighting that characterize the series capture Iceland’s atmospheric character.

The last image shows a more intimate and welcoming side of Iceland, which contrasts with the spectacular geological features and tourist destinations that the country is famous for. It shows the quieter, everyday beauty of Icelandic life: the view someone might have from the kitchen or living room window, watching the ever-changing light play on those distinctive green fields. The delicate lace curtains and framed photography on the windowsill offer a glimpse of domestic life and the aesthetics of Icelandic interiors.

The window sill photography creates a link between past and present, between the person in the picture and the life that continues in this house and its view of the surrounding green countryside.

Islanda 

Il mio reportage sull’Islanda cerca di documentare non solo il paesaggio, ma anche l’esperienza di incontrare queste forze primordiali che continuano a plasmare l’isola ancora oggi. Le immagini raccontano la storia di una terra in costante movimento geologico, dove i visitatori possono assistere all’azione dei poteri creativi e distruttivi della Terra.

Il paesaggio vulcanico è in primo piano: dai campi di lava ricoperti di muschio con il loro caratteristico tappeto verde che impiega decenni per stabilizzarsi, al lago vulcanico perfettamente circolare (Kerið) che testimonia le origini vulcaniche dell’Islanda. L’attività geotermica è mostrata nel terreno fumante, dove i visitatori appaiono quasi come spettri nella nebbia sulfurea.

Il patrimonio glaciale dell’Islanda è documentato attraverso gli iceberg che galleggiano nella laguna glaciale e la suggestiva cima del ghiacciaio sullo sfondo delle montagne. Queste immagini raccontano sia la bellezza che la fragilità del ghiaccio islandese, che si sta ritirando a causa dei cambiamenti climatici.

L’elemento umano fornisce un’importante prospettiva e contesto: escursionisti sulla passerella di legno che salgono su un cratere spento, la tradizionale casa in torba che rappresenta il patrimonio architettonico islandese e turisti che sperimentano la potenza selvaggia della cascata di Gullfoss.

L’interazione degli elementi – fuoco e ghiaccio, antico e moderno, umano e naturale – crea un’avvincente narrazione visiva su quest’isola nordica unica. I cieli costantemente incerti e l’illuminazione spettacolare che caratterizzano la serie catturano il carattere atmosferico dell’Islanda.

L’ultima immagine mostra un lato più intimo e accogliente dell’Islanda, che contrasta con le spettacolari caratteristiche geologiche e le destinazioni turistiche per cui il paese è famoso. Mostra la bellezza più tranquilla e quotidiana della vita islandese: la vista che qualcuno potrebbe avere dalla finestra della cucina o del soggiorno, osservando la luce in continuo cambiamento che gioca su quei caratteristici campi verdi. Le delicate tende di pizzo e la fotografia incorniciata sul davanzale  offrono uno scorcio della vita domestica e dell’estetica degli interni islandesi.

La fotografia sul davanzale crea un legame tra passato e presente, tra la persona nell’immagine e la vita che continua in questa casa e la sua vista sulla verde campagna circostante.
