Fish Market in Colaba, Mumbai

Early one Sunday morning, just after sunrise, I visited the fish market at Sassoon Docks, located in the Colaba district of Mumbai.
It is a place full of character that offers an authentic glimpse into the city’s long-standing fishing tradition. It is one of the oldest and most important wholesale fish markets in the metropolis.

Built on reclaimed land near the Arabian Sea, the market hosts over 1,500 fishing boats that unload around 20 tonnes of fresh fish every day, including some of the most sought-after varieties by restaurants and local residents.

The atmosphere is especially lively in the early morning when the fishermen return from the sea. It is a scene of intense, bustling activity: fishermen unloading crates of fish, fisherwomen, mainly from the indigenous Koli community, expertly shelling prawns, and vendors offering their catch directly from containers, while birds hover overhead, hoping to scavenge amid the commotion.
Despite the challenging working conditions, the market provides a vital source of livelihood for more than 150,000 people who depend on this trade.

I was naturally struck by the interplay of colours, textures, and the tireless energy of the workers, which, along with the centuries-old history of the docks,  gives this place a unique and vibrant atmosphere.

Mercato del pesce a Colaba, Mumbai

Una domenica mattina dopo l’alba, ho visitato il mercato del pesce di Sassoon Docks, situato nel quartiere di Colaba a Mumbai.

È un luogo ricco di fascino che offre uno spaccato autentico della lunga tradizione peschereccia della città. È uno dei mercati ittici all’ingrosso più antichi e importanti della metropoli.
Costruito su terreni bonificati vicino al Mar Arabico, il mercato ospita oltre 1.500 pescherecci che ogni giorno scaricano circa 20 tonnellate di pesce fresco, inclusi alcuni tra i più richiesti da ristoranti e residenti locali.

L’atmosfera del mercato è particolarmente vivace al mattino presto, quando i pescatori tornano dal mare. È uno spettacolo di frenetiche attività: pescatori che scaricano casse di pesce, pescatrici, soprattutto della comunità indigena Koli, che sgusciano i gamberetti con abilità straordinaria, e venditori che propongono il pesce direttamente dai loro contenitori, mentre vari uccelli cercano di approfittare del caos per trovare cibo.
Nonostante le condizioni di lavoro difficili il mercato rappresenta una fonte fondamentale di sostentamento per oltre 150.000 persone che dipendono da questo commercio.

Ovviamente mi ha colpito l’interazione di colori, texture e l’energia instancabile dei lavoratori, che, insieme alla storia secolare del molo, conferisce a questo luogo un’atmosfera unica e vibrante.
