The Gerewol

The Woodabe, also known as Bororo, nomadic Fulani herders of Nilotic origin gather every year after the rainy season in certain areas of the Chadian and Nigerian Sahel to perform a ritual courtship dance: the Gerewol.

On this occasion, the Woodabes show off and challenge each other in a real beauty contest.

The day of the festival begins with the moment of make-up and dressing that engages all the young suitors. The dance, in a circle, typical of the Fula tradition, is accompanied by jumps, songs and the hypnotic rhythm of clapping hands, feet and the sound of bells worn over the clothes. The criteria for judging the beauty of suitors are the whites of the eyes, the color of the teeth, all aspects enhanced by makeup: red clay on the face, eyeliner on the eyes, lipstick on the lips and white ostrich feathers in the hair. During the dance, men often raise their eyes to the sky and show their teeth to emphasize these characteristics. Before the dances begin, participants drink a concoction of fermented bark which, with its hallucinogenic effects, allows them to dance incessantly until late at night.

It will be the unmarried women of the clan who choose, at the end of the dances, the young males considered more beautiful.

Il Gerewol

I Woodabe, anche detti Bororo, pastori nomadi Fulani di origine nilotica si riuniscono ogni anno dopo la stagione delle piogge in determinate zone del Sahel ciadiano e nigeriano per esibirsi in una danza di corteggiamento rituale: il Gerewol. 

In questa occasione i Woodabe si mettono in mostra e si sfidano in un vero e proprio concorso di bellezza.

La giornata del festival inizia con il momento del trucco e della vestizione che impegna tutti i giovani pretendenti. La danza, in cerchio, tipica della tradizione Fula, è accompagnata da salti, canti e dal ritmo ipnotico del battere delle mani, dei piedi e dal suono dei campanelli indossati sopra le vesti. I criteri per giudicare la bellezza dei pretendenti sono il bianco degli occhi, il colore dei denti, tutti aspetti esaltati dal trucco: argilla rossa sul viso, eyeliner sugli occhi, rossetto sulle labbra e penne di struzzo bianche tra i capelli. Durante la danza gli uomini alzano spesso gli occhi al cielo e mostrano la dentatura per enfatizzare queste caratteristiche. I partecipanti, prima dell’inizio delle danze, bevono un intruglio di corteccia fermentata che, con i suoi effetti allucinogeni, consente loro di ballare incessantemente fino a notte fonda.

Saranno le donne nubili del clan a scegliere, alla fine delle danze, i giovani maschi considerati più belli.
