Easter in Maramures

Located in the far north of Romania, the Maramures region seems to belong to another world out of time. Life still follows a very ancient rhythm in traditions and in the way of experiencing the holidays, now almost disappeared in other places. There is a strong sense of belonging to the Orthodox community and Easter is the most important feast of the liturgical year, the Resurrection of the Lord, which is lived with intensity and participation.

Holy Thursday, before Easter, is the day of the dead for Romanians and people go to cemeteries to visit their dead and to the adjoining cemetery church to pray.

On Saturday evening the evocative Midnight Mass, the Mass of the Resurrection, is celebrated. With the lights off, with a special rite, the “Holy Light” arrives and passes from the priest holding a lit candle, to all present, who in turn will light theirs. It is traditional that with lit candles we go around the church three times.

On Easter day, the world lights up again and the resurrection of Christ is sung. It is the closing of the Great Lent.

Pasqua in Maramures

Situata all’estremo nord della Romania, la regione del Maramures sembra appartenere ad un altro mondo fuori tempo. La vita segue ancora un ritmo antichissimo nelle tradizioni e nel modo di vivere le feste, ormai quasi scomparso in altri luoghi. E’ forte il senso di appartenenza alla comunità ortodossa e la Pasqua è la festa più importante dell’anno liturgico, la Resurrezione del Signore, che viene vissuta con intensità e partecipazione.

Il Giovedì Santo, prima della Pasqua, per i rumeni è il giorno dei morti e la gente si reca nei cimiteri a far visita ai propri defunti e nella annessa chiesa del cimitero a pregare.

Il Sabato sera si celebra la suggestiva Messa di mezzanotte, la messa di Resurrezione. A luci spente, con un rito speciale, arriva la “Luce Santa” che passa dal prete con in mano una candela accesa, a tutti presenti, che a loro volta accenderanno le loro. E’ tradizione che con le candele accese si faccia il giro della chiesa per tre volte.

Il giorno di Pasqua il mondo si riaccende e si canta la resurrezione di Cristo. E’ la chiusura della Grande Quaresima.
