The Charcoal Burners Of Serra San Bruno

On the mountains of Serra San Bruno in Calabria there are the last charcoal burners, who still proudly practice the ancient activity of producing natural charcoal with traditional methods, a passion that has been handed down from father to son.

The difficult work begins with the collection of wood which, after cutting it into logs, must be arranged in a conical shape to make the charcoal pit, leaving a circular mouth in the center that is used to light the fire and to let the smoke escape. Everything is covered with earth and wet straw to create a slow-burning environment, which allows the transformation of wood into charcoal. This process lasts about 10/15 days and the charcoal pit must always be checked and fed day and night.

 The charcoal burner’s job is a very hard job, which is done with precision and passion, sometimes interrupted only for a few chats and a cigarette, in an infernal environment between smoke vapors and black dust, which mark his face, hands and health.

I CARBONAI DI SERRA SAN BRUNO

Sulle montagne di Serra San Bruno in Calabria  ci sono gli ultimi carbonai, che, con orgoglio, praticano ancora l’antica attività della produzione del carbone vegetale naturale con i metodi tradizionali, una passione che si tramanda di padre in figlio.

Il lavoro non facile inizia con la  raccolta della legna che, dopo averla tagliata in ceppi, bisogna sistemare in forma conica per realizzare la carbonaia, lasciando al centro una bocca circolare che serve per accendere il fuoco e per far fuoriuscire il fumo. Il tutto viene ricoperto di terra e paglia bagnata per creare un ambiente a combustione lenta, che permette la trasformazione della legna in carbone vegetale. Questo processo dura circa 10/15 giorni e la carbonaia deve essere sempre controllata ed alimentata giorno e notte.

 Il mestiere del carbonaio è un lavoro durissimo,  che viene fatto con precisione e passione, interrotto a volte solo per qualche chiacchiera e una sigaretta, in un ambiente infernale tra vapori di fumo e polvere nera, che ne segnano il volto, le mani e la salute.
