Happy Cholet is a photographic work made in 2024 in El Alto, Bolivia, dedicated to Cholets. The term comes from the fusion of the words cholo (used to indicate people of indigenous origin) and chalet and identifies buildings that represent a symbol of social ascent and cultural pride for the Aymara community. For the new indigenous bourgeoisie of El Alto, the Cholets are not just prestigious homes, but real social centers designed to host major events and celebrations.

Cholets are multifunctional structures organized on several levels. Generally the ground floor is intended for commercial activities, the intermediate level houses large rooms for receptions and parties, while on the top floor there is the private residence of the owners, built as a chalet on the top of the building. This particular configuration reflects their role not only as homes, but also as places of social representation and community aggregation.

The images tell the architecture of these buildings and their use in the hours leading up to a wedding celebration. In a wedding in the Cholets, every room is designed to surprise the guests: the large decorated rooms, the lights, the colors and the scenographic apparatus show how these spaces have been conceived to accommodate collective events of great participation.

Marriage thus becomes a key to understanding the meaning of the Cholets in the contemporary society of El Alto, where cultural identity, economic success and community dimension find expression within the same space.

Happy Cholet è un lavoro fotografico realizzato nel 2024 a El Alto, in Bolivia, dedicato ai Cholet. Il termine nasce dalla fusione delle parole cholo (utilizzata per indicare le persone di origine indigena) e chalet e identifica edifici che rappresentano un simbolo di ascesa sociale e di orgoglio culturale per la comunità Aymara. Per la nuova borghesia indigena di El Alto, i Cholet non sono soltanto abitazioni di prestigio, ma veri e propri centri sociali progettati per ospitare grandi eventi e celebrazioni.

I Cholet sono strutture multifunzionali organizzate su più livelli. Generalmente il piano terra è destinato ad attività commerciali, il livello intermedio ospita ampie sale per ricevimenti e feste, mentre all’ultimo piano si trova la residenza privata dei proprietari, costruita come uno chalet posto sulla sommità dell’edificio. Questa particolare configurazione riflette il loro ruolo non solo come abitazioni, ma anche come luoghi di rappresentazione sociale e di aggregazione comunitaria.

Le immagini raccontano l’architettura di questi edifici e il loro utilizzo nelle ore che precedono una celebrazione matrimoniale. In un matrimonio nei Cholet ogni ambiente è progettato per sorprendere gli ospiti: le grandi sale decorate, le luci, i colori e gli apparati scenografici mostrano come questi spazi siano stati concepiti per accogliere eventi collettivi di grande partecipazione.

Il matrimonio diventa così una chiave di lettura per comprendere il significato dei Cholet nella società contemporanea di El Alto, dove identità culturale, successo economico e dimensione comunitaria trovano espressione all’interno di uno stesso spazio.
