I took this series on Mexico City on the first week of February 2024 during a practically improvised trip, with a Yashica Mat EM on Kentmere film. I live in Madison, Wisconsin, in the North American Midwest, and the winters, while nice, are cold and dark, and now that I’ve known them for a few years, I admit that they’re too long for how hard they are.

This year I thought I would make it, but there was little sun and little snow, and in January I couldn’t stand: I decided to leave for a week to get a dose of vitamin D in the south. After a quick study of the flights and prices, I decided to go and visit Mexico City, without preconceptions and without knowing what to expect.

I didn’t have any waiting for it to arrive, but I brought with me the Yashica medium format camera that I love because it is light, silent, and makes me feel like Vivian Maier in Chicago in the 1960s. On the spot I found a colorful city, full of life, very welcoming and immediate charm, where magic, art, music, a greedy and joyful taste for life are shown without filter with few access barriers. Just what I needed as a cure for seasonal depression.

The black and white photos with the 6×6 square format give the photos that result from my experience a look out of time, immediately nostalgic, but still marked by the period in which they were taken. I develop and scan all my analogue photographs myself, and I apologise if there is any dust left, but it’s part of my imperfectionist style.

Mexico City

Questa mia serie su Città del Messico l’ho fotografata durante la prima settimana di febbraio 2024 durante un viaggio praticamente improvvisato, con una Yashica Mat EM su pellicole della Kentmere. Vivo a Madison, Wisconsin, nel Midwest Americano settentrionale, e gli inverni, anche se sono belli, sono freddi e scuri, e ormai che li conosco da qualche anno, ammetto che sono anche troppo lunghi per quanto sono duri.

Quest’anno pensavo che ce l’avrei fatta, ma c’è stato poco sole e poca neve, e a Gennaio non ho retto: ho deciso di partire une settimana a riprendere una dose di vitamina D al sud. Dopo uno rapido studio dei voli dei prezzi, ho deciso di andare a visitare la città del Messico, senza preconcetti e senza sapere cosa aspettarmi.

Non avevo attese arrivando, ma mi sono portata appresso la macchinetta medio formato Yashica che amo perché è leggera, silenziosa, e mi fa sentire come Vivian Maier a Chicago negli anni 1960. Sul posto ho trovato una città colorata, piena di vita, molto accogliente ed al fascino immediato, dove la magia, l’arte, la musica, un gusto di vivere goloso e gioioso si danno a vedere senza filtro con poche barriere d’accesso. Proprio quello che serviva a me come cura alla depressione stagionale.

Le foto in bianco e nero col formato quadrato 6×6 danno alle foto che risultano della mia esperienza un look fuori dal tempo, immediatamente nostalgico, ma comunque segnato dal periodo in cui sono state prese. Sviluppo e scansione tutte le mie fotografie analogiche me stessa, e mi scuso se resta qualche chicco di polvere, ma fa parte del mio stile imperfezionista.
