Japan, between sacred and representation

A visual journey through the many souls of Japan, where spirituality and contemporary imagery intertwine in daily gestures, rituals and looks. Each photograph is a fragment that tells the subtle balance between devotion and mise-en-scène.  This series does not follow a geography, but an invisible line that unites atmospheres and contrasts. A Japan that welcomes opposites, mixes them and lets them coexist.

They range from the celebration of Buddha’s birthday in Tokyo — where the faithful pour water on the statue of the newborn Siddhartha — to the ritual of fishing for lucky sticks (omikuji), suspended between faith and play. In Hiroshima, a trumpet player plays absorbed in front of the Dome, a symbol of memory and silence. Not far away, on an island, a torii emerges from the shallow water, while a man photographs puppets arranged on the shore, like surreal relics.

In Kyoto, the golden temple is reflected not on the water, but on a golden handbag, while the owner photographs it with her cell phone. In the markets, sake sellers offer tastings in a pragmatic way. In Osaka, the city center becomes a metaphorical carousel: passers-by, tourists, performers and girls dressed as manga characters move between reality and fiction.

This series does not want to explain Japan, but to restore its complexity. Each shot is an invitation to observe with open eyes and a curious mind, dwelling on what is poised between ritual and everyday life. Photography, here, is a tool for seeing better — not for understanding everything.

Giappone, tra sacro e rappresentazione

Un viaggio visivo tra le molteplici anime del Giappone, dove spiritualità e immaginario contemporaneo si intrecciano nei gesti quotidiani, nei riti e negli sguardi. Ogni fotografia è un frammento che racconta il sottile equilibrio tra devozione e messa in scena. 
Questa serie non segue una geografia, ma una linea invisibile che unisce atmosfere e contrasti. Un Giappone che accoglie gli opposti, li mescola e li lascia convivere.

Si passa dalla celebrazione del compleanno di Buddha a Tokyo — dove i fedeli versano acqua sulla statua del neonato Siddharta — al rito della pesca dei bastoncini della fortuna (omikuji), sospeso tra fede e gioco. A Hiroshima, un trombettista suona assorto davanti al Dome, simbolo di memoria e silenzio. Poco lontano, in un’isola, un torii emerge dall’acqua bassa, mentre un uomo fotografa dei pupazzi disposti sulla riva, come reliquie surreali.

A Kyoto, il tempio d’oro si riflette non sull’acqua, ma su una borsetta dorata, mentre la proprietaria lo fotografa con il cellulare. Nei mercati, i venditori di sakè offrono assaggi con fare pragmatico. A Osaka, il centro cittadino si fa carosello metaforico: passanti, turisti, performer e ragazze vestite da personaggi manga si muovono tra realtà e finzione.

Questa serie non vuole spiegare il Giappone, ma restituirne la complessità. Ogni scatto è un invito a osservare con occhi aperti e mente curiosa, soffermandosi su ciò che è in bilico tra il rito e il quotidiano. La fotografia, qui, è uno strumento per vedere meglio — non per capire tutto.
