Looking for aurora

The Northern Lights, also known as the Northern Lights, appear at night when the sky is dark. They are like a celestial ballet of lights dancing in the night sky, with a palette of colors ranging from green to blue and sometimes even pink and purple. In ancient times it was thought to be due to spirits or gods, but today we know that it is a phenomenon due to the solar wind, electromagnetism and the refraction of light, but it always remains an enigma. You can also chase the weather forecast, statistics, the KP index, but it will always have surprises in store for you. The dawn remains a goddess and as such fickle… must be prayed for by all possible means.

Seeing this spectacle is not easy, as several factors must coincide: the geographical area (north of the Arctic Circle or south of the Antarctic Circle), the time of year (it must be night!), the atmospheric condition (absence of clouds), the distance from artificial light sources and significant solar activity.

It is a matter of searching, of moving from one point to another in the area where we are, even traveling hundreds of kilometers trying to find the right place and time.

You have to stuff yourself with thermal clothes, then you have to focus your gaze a little higher than the horizon, in search of the stars. In the meantime we will have to try to keep our feet a little off the ground, so as not to feel them freeze while the cold assails you and makes you want to postpone the feat until the next day.

The Kp index is a great help, but it is only in the last, fateful minutes that we find out if the area we have arrived in could be good or not. It may happen that, not knowing what to look for, we may even have it in front of us and almost not realize it. You can mistake it for a clear cloud, but when you frame it with a digital camera you immediately realize that it is really her. To the naked eye it appears gray, almost colorless, but the monitor gives us clearly green shots: is this therefore the only famous aurora for which people make long journeys? This barely perceptible mist?

Then as soon as we start to doubt, quickly, the aurora is transformed. It becomes very similar to a highlighter strip even if small and collected; then it becomes wider and larger until it fills most of our field of vision, for a time that can even reach an hour or more. We witness a delicate and infinite dance, after which we can feel as if we were drunk, suspended in the void, floating almost as much as the flashes we had witnessed.

I have made several trips dedicated to this research and, after moving and waiting several nights in vain, I was able to witness this phenomenon.

Cercando l’aurora

Le aurore boreali, dette anche luci del nord, appaiono di notte quando il cielo è buio. Sono come un balletto celestiale di luci che danzano nel cielo notturno, con una tavolozza di colori che vanno dal verde al blu e talvolta anche rosa e viola. Nei tempi antichi si pensava fossero dovute a degli spiriti o agli dei, ma oggi sappiamo che è un fenomeno dovuto al vento solare, all’elettromagnetismo e alla rifrazione della luce, ma resta sempre un enigma. Si possono anche inseguire le previsioni del tempo, le statistiche, l’indice Kp, ma lei ci riserverà sempre delle sorprese. L’aurora resta una dea e come tale volubile…va pregata con tutti i mezzi possibili.

Vedere tale spettacolo non è semplice, in quanto diversi fattori devono coincidere: la zona geografica (a nord del circolo polare artico oppure a sud del circolo polare antartico), il periodo dell’anno (è necessario che ci sia la notte!), la condizione atmosferica (assenza di nuvole), la lontananza dalle sorgenti di luce artificiale e un’attività solare significativa.

Si tratta di cercare, di spostarsi da un punto all’altro della zona in cui siamo, percorrendo anche centinaia di chilometri cercando di trovare il posto ed il momento giusto.

Ci si deve imbottire di vestiti termici, poi bisogna puntare il nostro sguardo un po’ più su dell’orizzonte, in cerca delle stelle. Nel frattempo dovremo cercare di tenere i piedi un po’ sollevati da terra, per non sentirli ghiacciarsi mentre il freddo ti assale e ti fa venire voglia di rimandare l’impresa all’indomani.

L’indice Kp è un grande aiuto, ma è solo negli ultimi, fatidici minuti che si scopre se la zona in cui siamo arrivati potrebbe andare bene o no. Ci può capitare che, non sapendo cosa cercare, potremmo anche avercela davanti e quasi non accorgercene. La puoi scambiare per una nuvola chiara, quando invece se la inquadri con una macchina fotografica digitale realizzi subito che è proprio lei. A occhio nudo appare grigia, quasi incolore, ma il monitor ci restituisce degli scatti chiaramente verdi: è quindi solo questa la famosa aurora per cui la gente fa dei lunghi viaggi? Questa nebbiolina appena percettibile?

Poi appena iniziamo a dubitare, rapidamente, l’aurora si trasforma. Diventa molto simile ad una striscia di evidenziatore anche se piccola e raccolta; poi si fa sempre più ampia e grande fino a riempire la maggior parte del nostro campo visivo, per un tempo che può arrivare anche ad un’ora o più. Si assiste ad una danza delicata e infinita, dopo la quale ci si può sentire come ubriachi, sospesi nel vuoto, galleggianti quasi quanto i bagliori a cui avevamo assistito.

Ho fatto diversi viaggi dedicati a questa ricerca e, dopo essermi spostato ed aver atteso inutilmente diverse notti, sono riuscito ad assistere a tale fenomeno.
