Martin Ordeñana – Byzantium Whispers
Istanbul, a crossroads between two shores, lives on eternal contrasts and daily gestures. This black and white photographic series captures its essence, stripping it of color to reveal its naked human truth. The journey begins with the time-marked faces of men who carry on their shoulders “or literally on their heads” the weight of millenary traditions, such as the simit seller whose toil is transformed into a perfect geometry of circles of bread.
There is a composed dignity in the looks, both in the proud one of the elderly who observe the world from the threshold, and in the silent complicity that unites generations. A grandfather and his young grandson, sitting at a table in a still empty restaurant, wait for the arrival of customers with a patience that speaks of past and future times that intertwine.
The narration then touches on sacredness and sharing: the silent devotion between the naves of a mosque and the decisive step of veiled women who cross sunny squares, creating silhouettes that seem cut out of the marble of history.
But Istanbul is also conversation: the ritual of tea consumed with friends, a moment of pause in which the veil becomes the frame of complicit smiles. Each shot is a fragment of a larger mosaic: from the Turkish flags waving above the tables of a bar, where political and social life is intertwined with the pleasure of a coffee, to the solitary figure that moves away under the arches of a courtyard.
This series is a tribute to the resilience and beauty of a people who inhabit a city suspended between two worlds, where every corner holds a secret and every face tells a story.
