Walking through the streets of Istanbul, what I experienced was a mixture of sensations. Its buildings, imposing and majestic, reflect a monumental past, transporting us from the ancient Roman Empire to the age of the sultans. Yet the aspect that struck me most was the human one: the almost constant presence of people in the streets, occupying and bringing life  to the urban space; the city’s strong connection with art, where paintings, tapestries, and reading seem to pulse through the countless markets; and the religiosity, ever present in daily life, surrounding it with an almost mystical atmosphere through the daily calls to prayer. Finally, there is the connection with animals: it is impossible not to notice the remarkable feline presence, all are very cared for, as if by a pact in which everyone is responsible for their well-being. Traveling to Istanbul was not merely about getting to know a new capital or a new country, but about immersing myself in a new culture, in which the human aspect took center stage and brought me closer to what makes us human. 

Istanbul, Viva

Camminando per le strade di Istanbul, ciò che ho provato è stato un misto di sensazioni. I suoi edifici, imponenti e maestosi, riflettono un passato monumentale, trasportandoci dall’antico Impero Romano all’epoca dei sultani. Eppure l’aspetto che mi ha colpito di più è stato quello umano: la presenza quasi costante di persone per strada, che occupano e danno vita allo spazio urbano; il forte legame della città con l’arte, dove dipinti, arazzi e letture sembrano pulsare nei mercati infiniti; e la religiosità, sempre presente nella vita quotidiana, che la circonda di un’atmosfera quasi mistica attraverso le chiamate quotidiane alla preghiera. Infine, c’è il legame con gli animali: è impossibile non notare la straordinaria presenza felina, tutti sono molto curati, come se fosse un patto in cui ognuno è responsabile del proprio benessere. Viaggiare a Istanbul non è stato solo conoscere una nuova capitale o un nuovo paese, ma immergermi in una nuova cultura, in cui l’aspetto umano era al centro della scena e mi avvicinava a ciò che ci rende umani.
