There are only a few fishermen of “moeche” (crabs) and all concentrated in the Venice lagoon. Theirs is hard and demanding work that has been handed down from father to son. You wake up very early, before dawn, then you start to frantically navigate the lagoon to move the poles of the nets or to pull them up and check the booty … crabs, crustaceans and big fish are kept, the rest goes back to sea.
During a trip to Venice, I got to see these fishermen at work and I was struck by the contrast between this frenzy in their movements and the placid calm that the surrounding landscape transmits, even more perceptible in the moments of work break of the fishermen and that I wanted to represent in the shots that I present.

Sono rimasti in pochi i pescatori di “moeche” (granchi) e tutti concentrati nella laguna di Venezia. Il loro è un lavoro duro e impegnativo che si tramanda di padre in figlio. Ci si sveglia molto presto, prima dell’alba, si inizia poi a navigare freneticamente in laguna per spostare i pali delle le reti o per tirarle su e controllare il bottino…granchi, crostacei e pesci grossi vengono tenuti, il resto torna in mare.
Durante un viaggio a Venezia, ho avuto modo di vedere all’opera questi pescatori e sono rimasto colpito dal contrasto tra questa frenesia nei loro spostamenti e la calma placida che trasmette il paesaggio circostante, ancor più percepibile nei momenti di pausa lavorativa dei pescatori e che ho voluto rappresentare negli scatti che presento.
